Air Hockey Tips and Strategies

Whether you want to become an air hockey pro or just want to impress your buddies, here are a few tips to help you take control of the air hockey table.

It's All About Form
Like most sports, form is crucial in air hockey. Holding the air hockey mallet by the top of the knob is a common mistake most rookies make. The proper way to hold an air hockey mallet is to grasp it behind the knob instead of on top.

There's no doubt that improperly holding an air hockey mallet will slow you down. By using proper form, you will discover that you have more wrist action and are more agile, enabling you to not only move the mallet around the air hockey table more quickly, but also more accurately.

Strong Defense
When your opponent has control of the mallet, be sure you are ready to defend your half of the air hockey table. One of the best ways to guard your goal in air hockey is to keep your mallet about a foot from the goal.

This air hockey defense strategy allows you to react quickly whether it's a straight shot or bank shot.

Take Control
Often times in air hockey, people feel rushed and take shots without getting control of the air hockey puck. The best air hockey players are the ones that get control of the mallet and assess the air hockey table to determine where their best shot is.

Keep the following in mind when you are on the offense in air hockey:

  • Typically in air hockey, the best way to score is to shoot for the corners.
  • Shoot hard. Remember with air hockey, you need enough speed to sneak by your opponent in order to score.
  • Avoid hitting the rails of the air hockey table. If the puck hits the rails of the air hockey table multiple times on its way to the goal, it most likely won't have enough speed to get by your opponent.
